A
split air conditioner, also known as a ductless air conditioner
or ductless mini-split unit, is a hybrid between window cooling
systems and central AC units. Split units consist of one-half of
the system, the compressor and condenser, located outdoors with
a tube connecting the second half of the system, the exterior wall-mounted
air circulator with evaporator coil located inside. These systems
are great options for homes with few windows or where the installation
of ductwork would be inefficient or cost-prohibitive.
Split
unit air coolers are extremely quiet compared to other room air
conditioning units, because the typically loud compressor and
condenser coil are maintained outside the home. In addition, split
units are available with various electronic and remote control
features including timers, sleep mode, restart, self-test diagnostics,
filter cleaning warning alarm/LED, temperature display on indoor
unit, low ambient operation and dehumidifier mode.
Shoppers
considering whether to buy air conditioners with split features
may do well to consider Sharp single duct air conditioners. Sharp
split system units utilize a plasmacluster ion technology. The
manufacturer declares this development can reduce bird virus by
99% and odor-causing bacteria, and inactivate airborne viruses
and mold. Sharp initially developed such AC units for sale overseas
and these air conditioners are currently in use in 58 countries
worldwide. Sharp now produces air purifiers with plasmacluster
ion technology for the U.S. market and is incorporating the technology
into many other product lines sold worldwide.
