Fans can provide a great alternative to AC cooling systems. Fans that cool the entire house, and which can be installed by contractors, can be particularly helpful in areas where the temperature drops at night because these fans work by taking in cold air from outside and releasing it through the roof. It is important for the homeowner to note that cooling fans cool people, not the air in a room, by creating a breeze to circulate air across the skin.

Industrial fans are typically used in workplace or commercial settings, where high volume cooling, fume exhaust and/or filtration are needed but where the installation or maintenance of central air is cost-prohibitive or otherwise impractical.

Ceiling fans can provide significant cooling, creating a breeze to circulate air across the skin, and can be run in a counter-clockwise direction to blow the air downward. In this way, fans can effectively cool the people in a room by as much as 10 degrees.

Portable electric fans are a type of axial fan that can be moved from room to room. Floor fans and pedestal fans are both types of portable electric fans that provide a great cooling solution when wall air conditioners and ceiling fans are not viable cooling options. These fans are rated based on a number of factors including size, airflow (CFM) rating, number of blades and, for pedestal fans, height. Floor fans may be preferred where airflow and ventilation is required at foot level and/or where an air conditioning unit is not otherwise accommodated because of space limitations. In addition, these fans are inexpensive, easy to operate and generally provide very little noise. Pedestal fans offer similar benefits to floor fans except the height gives these fans versatility in terms of being placed behind furniture or other objects.

Cooler fans sometimes evaporative fans or swamp coolers blow the air through water or another substance to cool it. This process results in a room that feels cooler than standard axial fans. As the air travels through a cooler fan, it picks up moisture and so these fans are more practical and popular in dry less humid climates. In addition to humidifying properties, benefits of cooler fans include low cost, energy efficiency, easy maintenance and, for some, a pleasant cedar smell.
