Bathrooms are an indispensable room in any home. The place where the toilet, sink, shower and/or bath are housed, the bathroom generates a large amount of moisture and steam. A bathroom exhaust fan is typically designed with the do-it-yourself homeowner in mind and fan installation, including ceiling fan installation, can often be accomplished without professional help. Exhaust fans that are installed in the bathroom are also known as bathroom ventilation fans. These fans remove odor and moisture in addition to providing cooling benefits. In removing moisture, the fans have the added benefit of preventing rust, mildew, and foggy mirrors. The moisture removal function of bathroom fans can be a huge plus as excess moisture can cause many problems, including mildew, mold and peeling paint.

Because of the important air quality and moisture removal function performed by bathroom fans, maintenance of the unit is extremely important. Inefficient operation of an exhaust fan located in the bathroom can lead to problems such as peeling paint and the growth of fungi which could ultimately lead to respiratory problems. A homeowner who notices that the fan is no longer performing its moisture removal function or is otherwise operating inefficiently may contact the manufacturer to determine if a replacement fan is available.

There are many different types of fans available for installation in the bathroom, from ceiling fans to outdoor mounted fans with exterior ductwork. At its most basic level, the exhaust fan works by pulling heated air from a room and exhausting the air outdoors. A homeowner may also consider other types of fans, such as a propeller fan or a ventilation fan. Fans can also be purchased with integrated lights, which allows a ceiling mounted fan to double as a light source in the bathroom. Noise level of the fan is also a consideration when purchasing a fan, and manufacturers will often include noise ratings on the fans to indicate the level of noise that will be generated by the fan’s operation.
