An axial fan cools a room by creating airflow, basically moving air with the motion of propeller blades. These propeller fans are often located above the motor shaft of small room air conditioner units to add airflow to the cooling provided by the unit. Axial fans are noisier than centrifugal fans but they are also twice as efficient. Centrifugal fans, however, are used for larger AC units that deliver cooling through a duct system. A homeowner can keep in mind the rule that lar`ger fans are generally slower and quieter than small fans.

A ventilation fan, instead of cooling a room by movement, operates by removing the hot air and venting it outdoors. By decreasing heat flowing into the home, ventilations are able to provide cooling. Attic fans are a type of ventilation fan that regulates the heat and humidity of the home by exhausting heat through attic vents. Exhaust fans and whole house fans also operate by venting heated air.

Homeowners considering whether to buy a propeller fan may also want to consider purchasing a fan with variable speeds. For example, a 2-speed fan can be set at a higher speed for quick ventilation and set to a lower speed for gentler circulation with less noise.

There are a variety of axial flow fans and exhaust fans that can be purchased online. Homeowners who want to “try before they buy” an axial or vent-based fan can also purchase a fan in a brick and mortar shop where they can try a variety of different fan types and speeds. Regardless of where the fan is purchased, a homeowner may also consider the ease of installation, as many fans are easy to install without the assistance of a professional technician.
